After a radical “roof-ride” on Saturday Mike Porter driving the immaculete AlumiCraft, Micket Thompson/LAT sponsored Unlimited Buggy, came back with a vengence to walk off with all the toys in Sunday’s Unlimited Buggy Main event.
Short course racing is always exciting for fans and competitors alike but make it a night race under the lights and it pumps adrenalin to a whole new level. That was the case at Glen Helen Park in Northern San Bernardino county when Geiko presented the August 4-5 running of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series.
Weather was typical So Cal August, awesome, and rapid often rabid competition in all classes kept fans on their feet and drivers pushing the limit. Pro Buggy Unlimited really had it going on as Doug Fortin was determined to take home the bacon and tie LeDuc’s record of 6 straight wins. But, Mike Porter driving the Mickey Thompson/LAT/Speed Energy/AlumiCraft sponsored #8 had plans of his own and they didn’t include following anyone across the finish line.
If there was any doubt as to Porter’s intensions they were made clear at the end of the first lap as he dropped the hammer hard, taking the lead over John Holmes #3, Fortin #96, Jerry Whelchel #5, and Geoffrey Cooley #22. No quarter was given and on lap 2 Holmes crawled up the back of Porter, faltered and dropped in behind Fortin. Lap 4 saw Cooley roll in turn two, bringing out a full course yellow. Under yellow, the running order was Porter, Fortin, Holmes, Whelchel, and Steele in the #16. On 16 lap fans were going ballistic as Porter showed his experience by darting high and then diving low to stave off a drop down inside charge by Fortin. With only 2 laps remaining Porter was pure focus, holding off any competition and taking home his second season win. LAT is proud to be a sponsor of the #8 car and supporter of the Lucas Off Road Racing Series. Get the inside scoop on team Porter AT www.redlineperformanceonline.com.
